Great Adventure is the Northeast's major coaster park, and its modern reputation rests on El Toro — the 2006 Intamin wooden coaster whose abrupt, violent airtime has ranked it among the best in the world for two decades. Nitro, the lakefront B&M hyper, gives the park a second marquee, and the supporting lineup of Batman, Superman and the Dark Knight is deeper than any park within a hundred miles of New York.
The park's most famous ride is gone. Kingda Ka, the 456-foot stratacoaster that was the tallest in the world for its entire twenty-year life, closed permanently at the end of the 2024 season along with Zumanjaro, the drop ride on its tower. The announcement was one of the biggest stories in the industry's modern history. Visitors still arrive asking for it, so this site lists it as closed rather than deleting it — the empty space by the front of the park is now part of the park's story.
Great Adventure is big, flat and spread out — over five hundred acres including the safari — and the walks between coaster corners are long. Summer Saturdays draw the region's biggest single-park crowds; September and October weekdays, with the fall haunt on weekends, are the connoisseur's window.

The El Toro windows
Its queue peaks at open (because everyone races there), dips at lunch, and dies at close. Ride first thing, skip noon, finish in the dark.
September weekdays are the park's secret
Full operation, thin crowds, the haunt decor going up. The best conditions of the Great Adventure year are the weeks nobody photographs.
The safari pairs with a half-day, not a full one
Drive-through in the morning, coasters after noon is the classic combo. Doing both fully in one day is a marathon.

Exit-driving logic
The park sits at the I-195/NJ Turnpike corner — Manhattan is an hour-plus without shore traffic, Philadelphia similar. A July Friday return drive can double that.

Vast lots off Route 537; preferred rows near the gate. Trams serve the outer rows seasonally.

Security screening sits at the lot-side gate. At open, the El Toro walk is 12–15 minutes from the turnstiles — build it into the rope-drop plan.
How to get here
- By car: Exit 16 off the NJ Turnpike or I-195 exit 16, in Jackson. Manhattan is 65 miles northeast; Philadelphia 60 miles southwest.
- By rideshare: well-served, with a dedicated drop-off loop.
- There is no rail link; buses from the cities exist but are slower than driving.

Is Kingda Ka still at Great Adventure?
No. Kingda Ka closed permanently at the end of the 2024 season, along with Zumanjaro: Drop of Doom on the same tower. The coaster was the tallest in the world for its entire operating life. The park has redeveloped the site, and any planning resource still listing it is out of date.
What is the best ride at Great Adventure?
El Toro, and it is not close. The 2006 Intamin woodie has ranked among the world's best since it opened — steep, abrupt, airtime-violent. Nitro is the steel complement, and the two together are a full day's worth of marquee riding.
Can you do Great Adventure in one day?
On a weekday, yes with a plan: El Toro at open, the lakefront steel midday, re-rides at close. On summer Saturdays the crowd makes a full-credit day impossible without the line-skip product.
