Your options, by resort
Both coasts do this differently, and the right answer depends on which one you are going to.
Southern California
- Knott's Scary Farm — Knott's Scary Farm is the oldest big haunt in the country — running since 1973 — and still among the best: dozens of mazes, scare zones through the real Ghost Town, and a separately-ticketed night event that transforms the whole park.
- Howl-O-Scream at SeaWorld San Diego — Howl-O-Scream is SeaWorld San Diego's separately-ticketed Halloween night: produced haunted houses, scare zones and coasters running after dark across the marine park. The San Diego edition is the smallest of the three SeaWorld haunts and the most atmosphere-per-acre — the bay-side park turns genuinely eerie.
- Fright Fest at Six Flags Magic Mountain — Fright Fest is Six Flags Magic Mountain's included-with-admission Halloween overlay: scare zones and decorated midways by day, haunts after dark, with some upcharged attractions. Magic Mountain's version leans on the hillside park's scale — the midways between the summit and the plaza carry the atmosphere.
- Brick-or-Treat at LEGOLAND California — Brick-or-Treat is Legoland California's family Halloween: costume days, brick-built decor, treat stations and party nights — the light-scare counterweight to every intense haunt on this site.
Texas
- Fright Fest at Six Flags Over Texas — Fright Fest is Six Flags Over Texas's included-with-admission Halloween overlay: scare zones and decorated midways by day, haunts after dark, with some upcharged attractions. The original park's version wraps the tower section and Gotham strip in the chain's standard haunt format.
- Howl-O-Scream at SeaWorld San Antonio — Howl-O-Scream is SeaWorld San Antonio's separately-ticketed Halloween night: produced haunted houses, scare zones and coasters running after dark across the marine park. The Texas edition is one of the region's two major haunts and the biggest produced event in the San Antonio market.
Orlando
- Howl-O-Scream at SeaWorld Orlando — Howl-O-Scream is SeaWorld Orlando's separately-ticketed Halloween night: produced haunted houses, scare zones and coasters running after dark across the marine park. The Orlando edition is the biggest of the three and a genuine third pole in the city's Halloween season alongside the Disney and Universal events.
New Jersey
- Fright Fest at Six Flags Great Adventure — Fright Fest is Six Flags Great Adventure's included-with-admission Halloween overlay: scare zones and decorated midways by day, haunts after dark, with some upcharged attractions. The Northeast's biggest fall crowd nights — Great Adventure's Fright Fest Saturdays are among the year's busiest days at any park on this site.
Chicago

The Chicago park's version is the region's default Halloween theme park night and the best-attended of its seasonal overlays.
The three tiers of scare
The hard-ticket haunts — Knott's Scary Farm and the three Howl-O-Screams — are produced evening events with haunted houses, scare actors and coasters after dark, sold as separate tickets. The included overlays — the four Six Flags Fright Fests — are atmosphere layered on a normal ride day, free with admission. And the deliberate counterweight — Legoland's Brick-or-Treat — is Halloween with the fear removed, for the under-tens.
Choosing between tiers is choosing the evening's product, not its quality: a haunt fan's best night is a family's worst, and this site ranks them within their purpose rather than across it.
The intensity ladder, plainly
For scare tolerance, the honest order from most to least intense: Knott's Scary Farm first — the genre's founder and still its benchmark — then the Howl-O-Screams at Orlando, San Antonio and San Diego in a tight band, then the Fright Fests as a clear step down in production and intensity, and Brick-or-Treat last with none at all.
Age guidance follows the same ladder: the hard-ticket events recommend against young guests in their own materials, Fright Fest evenings are PG-13 with roaming actors, and Brick-or-Treat is built precisely for the kids every other line excludes.
The planning calendar
Everything opens in the last ten days of September and runs weekends through Halloween. The crowd physics are uniform across all nine: opening-weekend and weeknight dates run calm, the last two Saturdays before Halloween run at the year's peak, and the best dates sell out first at every hard-ticket event.
Buy haunt tickets early and buy the calm nights; show up to Fright Fests whenever because they are included; and take the young family to Brick-or-Treat on whichever weekend fits, because its crowds are the gentlest of the season.

Which Halloween event is the best on this site?
Knott's Scary Farm, for haunt fans — it is the oldest big haunt in the country and still the benchmark for maze count and atmosphere. For value, the weeknight Howl-O-Scream tickets usually undercut the resort-park events while keeping the produced-haunt ambition.
Which is best for young kids?
Brick-or-Treat at Legoland California, unconditionally — it is the only event on this site with zero scare content. The Fright Fest daytime hours are the second answer: the overlays do not fully staff until dusk.
Are the haunts worth the separate tickets?
The hard-ticket events deliver a categorically different product from the included overlays — real haunted houses and produced nights against decorated ride days. If scares are the goal, yes; if riding is the goal, a Fright Fest weekend or any weekday serves better.
When do the events announce their dates?
Typically late August into early September, with Knott's usually earliest. This site carries every event as a pattern with a confidence label until the parks publish the current cycle's dates.
