Pirate Shores

The pirate water zone — splash battles, a soak-to-the-bone play structure, and the one dry ride: Captain Cranky's Challenge.

Pirate Shores is the park's water ambush: Splash Battle boats armed with water cannons on both sides, the Soak-N-Sail climbing-and-dumping structure, and Treasure Falls, the mini flume with the drop that gets the photo. It opened in summer 2007 and remains the area where someone in your party will end up wetter than planned.

The dry exception is Captain Cranky's Challenge, the rocking pirate boat at the area's edge — the ride for the members of the family holding the towels, the phones, and the dry socks. Plan the soak last, or bring the spare clothes; the area offers no middle ground.

Boat ride

Pirate Shores' dry ride — a Rockin'Tug boat that rocks a U-track and spins, the 42-inch-and-up pirate badge for young riders.

Captain Cranky's Challenge is the one dry ride in Pirate Shores: a tug-styled pirate boat that rocks back and forth along a short U-shaped half-pipe, adding a gentle spin as it swings. It opened with Pirate Shores in 2007 and has been the area's non-soaking option ever since — the ride you put the youngest pirates on while the rest of the party queues for Splash Battle.

Tips for Captain Cranky's Challenge
  • Ride it before Splash Battle, not after — it is the only dry bench in Pirate Shores and the one place a phone is safe.
  • Under 42 inches means a supervising companion rides too; the bench seats a family of four without splitting.
  • Pair it with the Dragon in the first hour: Pirate Shores soaks build the afternoon queue, and Cranky stays walk-on longest before noon.
