Los Angeles, Buena Park, Carlsbad and San Diego, California

Southern California

Four parks, one traffic pattern: Magic Mountain's coasters, Knott's haunt pedigree, Legoland's first coasters, and SeaWorld's dive machine.

Four of the ten parks this site covers sit within about a hundred miles of Los Angeles, with their own admission and operating terms. Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia is the region's coaster capital and the reason most enthusiasts fly in. Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park is the oldest of the four and the home of America's original big haunt. Legoland California in Carlsbad is a first-coasters park for under-tens. SeaWorld San Diego rounds it out with a small, modern thrill lineup built around a waterfront.

These parks have separate gate and event admission requirements. A single-day line-skip product is tied to its selected park and date; season-pass or membership add-ons have separate participating-park terms linked to the associated admission pass. Check those entitlements before planning a multi-park trip, then choose the order around each park’s schedule and your priorities.

Traffic is the fourth park. Valencia, Buena Park, Carlsbad and Mission Bay are one to two hours apart on the freeways depending on when you drive, and the difference between a 7am start and a 9am start is often a full hour of I-5 or I-405. Plan the drives, not just the parks.

The practical bits

Getting there
Fly into Burbank for Magic Mountain, LAX or Long Beach for Knott's, and San Diego for Carlsbad and Mission Bay. Most SoCal coaster trips are car trips; only Knott's is genuinely walkable from nearby hotels.
Getting around
A rental car is close to mandatory. Magic Mountain to Knott's is about an hour without traffic and two with it; Carlsbad to San Diego is 35 to 50 minutes. The coastal rail line connects Los Angeles, Burbank, Solana Beach and San Diego if you would rather not drive.
How many days
One day per park is the honest baseline, two for Magic Mountain if you want every coaster without racing. Four parks in four days is a real trip and a good one.
When to go
Weekdays outside summer. Magic Mountain in particular runs weekday operations where the coasters are genuinely walk-on in the morning; that is the single best crowd play in the region.
