Six Flags Magic Mountain
A plan, not a list of adjectives. What to sort before you go, what order to do things in, and the mistakes that cost first-timers two hours a day.
Magic Mountain rewards a plan more than any other park in Southern California, because the hill punishes improvisation. The park's shape is a loop around a mountain with the marquee coasters at the far ends of it, and the mistake every first-timer makes is ping-ponging.
The plan: choose current ride priorities, use their official land assignments to plan a walking route, and check the day’s operations. Tatsu is in Rapids Camp Crossing; Ninja is a separate Samurai Summit stop.
Check the operating calendar, current Fast Lane Reserve/Ultimate terms and selected-date price before buying. A quieter date may reduce the need, but a weekday does not guarantee short waits or make every product poor value.
The current coasters this guide tracks require 42, 48 or 54 inches. A 46-inch child can meet Ninja’s 42-inch minimum, but cannot meet Gold Rusher’s or Twisted Colossus’s 48-inch minimum. Check all other restrictions too; attraction staff make the final eligibility determination.
Several coasters require loose articles in lockers at the ride entrance. Bring minimal pockets, and expect the plaza lockers to be the best per-hour deal if you must carry things.
Magic Mountain runs reduced schedules much of the year, with some weekdays dark entirely outside summer and holidays. Verify your exact date before booking anything non-refundable.
Before open
Aim to arrive before the posted opening with time for parking, security and entry. The time needed varies by date and arrival conditions.
Rope drop
Prioritize Tatsu in Rapids Camp Crossing if it is operating and suitable for your party. Use the current official map for the route.
First hour
After Tatsu, continue to the next suitable current ride. Ninja is a separate stop in Samurai Summit, subject to its 42-inch minimum and physical restrictions.
Mid-morning
Plan Batman: The Ride in DC UNIVERSE and The Riddler’s Revenge in METROPOLIS as separate land stops.
Noon
Plan a meal break around the party’s needs and the current food-service queues. An early or later meal can be an option, but no restaurant-emptying time is guaranteed.
Early afternoon
Twisted Colossus is in Screampunk District, Goliath is in Goliath Plaza and West Coast Racers is in The Underground. Choose the next stop using current queues, the map and the party’s full ride restrictions.
Mid-afternoon
Water rides at the crossing while the heat peaks, then Viper on the ridge as the sun drops.
Late afternoon
Consider a repeat ride if it is operating and the current queue fits the remaining time; late-day waits can change.
Last hour
Consider Full Throttle in Six Flags Plaza if it is operating and its queue fits the remaining time. Check the actual closing time and your last transportation connection.
