Spain is the survivor: the section retains its original architecture and atmosphere from the park's themed beginnings, and it wraps two generations of coaster history — the Runaway Mine Train, one of the oldest continuously running mine trains anywhere, and the Judge Roy Scream woodie across the water.

This is the quietest, shadiest corner of the park and the best midday retreat. The mine train's 1966 date makes it older than most of the park's guests' parents.

Runaway Mine Train

The 1966 Arrow mine train — one of the oldest continuously operating roller coasters in America and the park's original family coaster.

Runaway Mine Train opened in 1966, making it one of the oldest coasters still running in the United States and the founding example of the mine-train genre that every regional park copied through the seventies. The lift, the dips and the tunnel through the Spain section's Caddo Lake setting are all original character.

  • The Spain setting is the park's best scenery; ride for the views as much as the history.

Judge Roy Scream

The 1980 lakeside wooden coaster — a proper out-and-back woodie whose first drop dives along the water and whose rattle is honest.

Judge Roy Scream is the park's classic wooden coaster, built in 1980 across the lagoon from the Spain section. It is a traditional out-and-back: lift, drop along the lakefront, airtime hills, turnaround, repeat. The woodie community holds it in genuine affection as a well-kept traditionalist ride.

  • Back seat for the airtime hills — classic woodies always perform best there.
  • Pair with the mine train for a Spain-section classics hour in the midday shade.
  • The lagoon-side drop reads best from the back seat; the front gets the view but the back gets the float.

La Vibora

The bobsled coaster — free-rolling cars in a smooth trough instead of fixed track, an increasingly rare ride type.

La Vibora ('the viper' in Spanish, fitting the Spain section) is an Intamin bobsled coaster: the cars are uncaptured, rolling through a half-pipe trough the way a bobsled runs ice. No two rides are identical because the line the car takes depends on its speed and load.

Tips for La Vibora
  • Single riders get wilder rides — lighter cars swing higher in the trough.
  • The uniqueness is the reason; ride it before the genre disappears entirely.
  • The final helix is the fastest section — the trough's banking does the steering, so relax and let it.
